Firstly, HDMI 1.3 DOES support 3D at 1080p so long as the device in question has a rated bandwidth of 225MHz or above, this is an increased bandwidth compared to earlier HDMI versions. The device may not be rated HDMI 1.4 simply because it does not support an audio return channel or other advanced 1.4 features (see below).
It adds support for Dolby TrueHD which is an advanced lossless multi-channel audio encoding found on Blu-Ray CDs and HD DVDs.
Dolby TrueHD is the successor to the AC-3 Dolby Digital surround sound encoding which was used on DVD discs. If you want the best audio quality and do justice to your high quality source and TV/projector, make sure the HDMI splitter/extender/switcher you buy is HDMI 1.3 compatible - Most Gefen products support HDMI 1.3!
And what about HDMI 1.4?
The specification for HDMI 1.4 was released in May 2009 and as yet (as of Jan 2011) there are practically no consumer TVs which support it. It increases resolution from 2560×1600 to 4096×2160. Although this is far beyond what you get from today’s High Def TV, such resolutions are common for larger computer monitors.
It also adds a specification for an audio return channel (to pass audio from a TV’s tuner back to an AV amplifier) and an embedded Ethernet channel.
